We visited North Island in Dec 2002, and South Island in Dec 2005. South Island was hands down the winner in terms of natural beauty and charm. Favorite town was Queenstown, and favorite daytime activity was a visit to Milford Sound in a 5-seater, single-engine plane, followed closely by jet-boating in the Shotover river.
